Studying how colors affect different people, either individually or as a group, is something some people build their careers on. Cultural differences mean that something that’s happy and uplifting in one country can be depressing in another. Mastering color theory gives artists and designers tools beyond mixing hues to accurately represent ideas and subject matter. Understanding how colors work together gives you control over the mood, movement and focal point of artwork. Color is one of the most obvious elements of art and design. Learning to use it well gives you a bold way to accomplish many design principles—harmony, emphasis, movement and balance–for more compelling designs. Students in the 2-D course complete a variety of exercises to explore and learn about color.
